Study Purpose

Amino acids form proteins for our bodies to use for energy. Glutamine is an amino acid that is found naturally in the human body and also in foods like meats, dairy products and raw spinach.

The Glutamine research study will evaluate if a study product, containing glutamine, will affect daily blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Researchers will also evaluate if the study product has an effect on appetite or hunger.

About the Study

This study will evaluate the effects of the study product on blood sugar levels when given with any currently prescribed therapies, which may include medication, diet, exercise or a combination.

Qualified participants will visit Pennington Biomedical a total of 7 times during an 18 week period.

Study Design

Number of Visits:

  • 1 screening visit
  • 4 study visits
  • 2 overnight stays at Pennington Biomedical

Procedures:

  • Medical history
  • Height and weight
  • Vital signs (pulse and blood pressure)
  • Physical exam
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine heart health
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Blood tests
  • Continuous glucose monitoring (sensor placement)
  • Meal tests
  • Questionnaires

Study Qualifications

To qualify for this research study, participants should:

  • Be 18 – 70 years of age
  • Be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
  • Be under the care of a healthcare professional for the management of type 2 diabetes

Study Duration

Participation in this research study will last approximately 18 weeks.

Compensation

Compensation of up to $600 is offered for completion of this study.
